You can't use that to find out the metal because IMO thickness of badges can vary. Checking the density you use weight of the badge and weight difference under water.

Yes it will, but to a smaller degree. It would have been much easier if we were testing bigger amounts as it will decrease the measureing uncertainty. In order to get a more certain result I will compare with tomback, nickelsilver, zinck badges and maybe weigh them three times each.

Thanks Thomas. I also wonder about the hinge, pin and catch too and how they would possibly affect the measurements. We would have to make sure we measure everything precisely and carefully, especially because of the small difference there will be in the end result between the density of tombak versus zink.

Glad the badge arrived safe and sound to you Ljungberg, anyway to get some scans of it straight on instead of these pics? Scans tend to get better details of the obverse and worn areas, and also the coloring of the badge tends to be more correct with a scanner.

I found out the density of this well discussed medal, its 8,35 (incl the neddle).
Zink is 7,1
Copper is 9,0
Brass 8,4
Iron is 7,9
What do you think, zink or buntmetal?

8,35 is for me definatly brass
