    Hi
I really like these cut out badges but I wanted to ask how you can 100% determine when this has been made

As long as you dont have a picture of exact the same badge in wear, in my opinion you cant be 100% sure if it is wartime. Exept it was done " yesterday".

I agree, I believe some sellers upgrade their pabs to cut-outs to increase the value.
Very difficult to tell when it was done. Like Valentino said: without pictures in wear you can't be sure.

But I realy like the pab wich started the tread! Very nice example!

          Hi guys,

I can only agree 100%. The only way I would buy one of these cut-out PABs would be if it came with a period photo of the vet wearing the same exact badge.

There is no way to know when a cutout was done. Same with a repair to a badge, its impossible to know if it was done 70 years ago or last week. There can be some good signs to look for on old cuts, like patina over the cut area, or worn down edges on the cuts, etc., but unfortunately those things can be simulated.

No doubts the badge that started this thread is a nice, original Schickle.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

nobody can say if the cut was made at wartime or just yesterday

            BUT

the risk to destroy a early PAB is IMO very very high if you will make a cut today

I think its a shame that such an attractive badge was cut up like this even if it was done during the war

I think the cut out adds some great history to a badge, I have multiple original photos in my collection showing this cut out and I have no doubts that thousands original cut outs are floating around. That being said I'm willing to pay the price of the badge for a badge that was cut out, but would never pay any serious extra.
                Kind regards,
                Giel

                    Why cut out

This is probably a stupid question but why did they cut out a piece of the badge, was there a reason, thanks john.
