Evidently these have flooded the collector market as of late. Shared opinion (I have never held one personally) is that they are fake, and I would have to agree.

Absolutely, which is sad because they look pretty. But even a good looking and well made fake remains a fake in the end.

          I agree 100%

I didn't think that this piece was good but I needed something in writing to show the poor fellow who Just suposedly bought it from a VET. But also wants to sell it right-away. ( I think he knows)

          Thanks again

            ...and the beat goes on.

Try a search, these have been discussed recently, if you need more fuel for your fire.

                Hello all

Just thought I would jump in here with my 2 cents, now I have no knowledge of these GAB’s but looking at it from an EK point of view….. All screw back EK’s are private purchase pieces so it would be reasonably safe to assume that any other awards would also be private purchase if they where screw back, yes? So if these pieces Were real, wouldn’t it carry Assman’s LDO mark of L/64? Instead of just the regular Assman’s mark that is found on regular issue pieces?

                Regards

                Dez

That's a very good question. I wonder what the answer is.

                  Cheers: Peter

                    Screwback GAB

                    Hello,
These pieces are absolutley fake. Militaria Magazine did an article on these fakes in the early 90's.
                    Regards,
                    Jody

                        Fake Assmann GAB

                        G'day
I just happen to have the copy of Militaria Mag handy, No 10, November 1994. The weights and Dimensions of the fake are Height 54.5mm, width 43mm, thickness 4mm, exterior diameter of the of the screw soldered on the reverse 5.5mm, height of the screw 4.5mm, diameter of the nut 40mm and thickness of the nut 6.5mm. The badge is cast in silver finsihed brass.

Hope this helps for future reference.

                        Scott

                          Hi Jerry,
these badges have been around for quite a few years and I recall them as far back as 1985. I have also seen EK1's, Panzer assault badges and even infantry assault's with this same screwback mount and the Assmann mark. They usually also have that frosty white powdered finish to them.

Naturally original screwbacks exist in some badges, but these fakes always have the same heavy and high screw mount and the same clamshell pattern on the disc. There are some other repros made with a smooth dome with a single rib across the face for tightening...and this conforms much better with known originals. But these fakes should be easily detected with basic knowledge.

                          Cheers, Wade K.
