    Schickle Heeresflak Discussion

    Gents,

It has been eight years since Marc's groundbreaking work on the Flak Badges. In that time we have identified two more makers to bring the number to 9 identified and one unknown maker. Recently this thread ( http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ghlight=muppet ) gave us an entirely new maker - Schickle - and I want to get everything on it in one place.

Makers of the Army Flak Badge

    Aurich
    Juncker
    LM
    Meybauer
    Forster & Barth
    Funke
    Rettenmaier
    Schickle
    Steinhauer & Luck
    Souval
    Pillow-crimp unknown maker

I know not everyone is happy with the identification of badges, but that is life. I present what I know and based on analysis I believe to be true.

    On Schickle

The two Schickle heeresflak designs bear all the hallmarks of Schickle - and most importantly they are TOMBAK! We need to think about Schickle as a maker of this badge. The Heeresflak was instituted on 18 July 1941 - but by mid 1941 Schickle was no longer making badges and had sold off its stocks. That the badges are Tombak makes perfect sense - these are the earliest (with Juncker) - and Schickle would have gotten the orders shortly before official institution. This gives us a very short production timeline. In fact I have only found TWO Schickle flaks! This makes sense and they should be very hard to find.

Here is the hardware - note Schickle used two types of catches and this is identical to one of them.

Here is the second variation that was sold at auction and unfortunately I was not able to acquire - note it has the other type of Schickle catch and is also Tombak.

Many thanks to Norm and Tom for the link to Schickle - beyond just the pin. Here Norm puts together some nice graphics showing the Schickle hardware that matches what we see of the army flak.

It is amazing to think Schickle could have made these badges - I was dumbfounded when I thought of the award institution date and spoke to Dietrich about the amount of time they would have had. We can only speculate but we are talking about a month, maybe a couple. In that time they may have churned out quite a few but how many survive to this day? I have one and know of another. And that they are Tombak only increases the value and interest. I hope you have found this useful and look forward to a discussion.

                      Nice thread Nick!
One question: shouldn't Brehmer also be on your list?
