    Sniper Badges

    Hello,
Continuing to post items from a recently deceased collector's estate. I don't hold much hope for these, but it can't hurt to get everything checked. The big one is actually pretty well made compared to the smaller one.
    Thank you,
    Dale

Hi Dale, IMO the first sniper badge is not what I would expect to see, the second is a good one.

        My books:

        - THE WEHRPAß & SOLDBUCH OF THE WH
        - THE SS TK RING
        - THE ITALIAN-GERMAN MEDAL
        - THE ANTI PARTISAN BADGE
        - THE AWARDS OF THE LW

        and more!

I like what I see with the second badge.

Yes, as discussed in past threads, the second one is the type favoured by some collectors on the basis of the equivocal evidence to date, but on the Feldgrau backing. "Good" is probably too strong a word at this point, at least for the community at large. That's not to say it's "bad" either -- just controversial.

The one with the silver cord has no chance being good, IMO.

Thanks all and especially to Norm for posting the threads. I have to admit, I only made it through about 16 pages on the long thread before I gave up, but at least I see that the second, less well made one is the more "accepted" version.

I just found out the executor of the estate has decided to send the entire collection to a dealer to sell, so I'm just going to post a couple of more things that I took pictures of.

Having said that, it's somewhat concerning that this patch from Staegemeir's site shows virtually identical stitching to that "favoured" version...

                  Best regards,

Norm, even on Snyder's site you can find the worst fakes and some rare original items... But this not concerns me, I think it is normal. They cannot sell only fakes, and sometimes they have some niece pieces too.

                      My books:

                      - THE WEHRPAß & SOLDBUCH OF THE WH
                      - THE SS TK RING
                      - THE ITALIAN-GERMAN MEDAL
                      - THE ANTI PARTISAN BADGE
                      - THE AWARDS OF THE LW

True, it's not conclusive, just concerning. Usually Staegemeir charges high prices for items he knows are original and somewhat lower prices (yet still quite expensive) for the fakes. This patch is relatively cheap. But I take your point, since I too have occasionally seen original badges on his site (albeit uncommonly).

                        Best regards,
                        ---Norm

The badge is completely missing the edgebanding, IMO it is like a normal badge missing hinge and catch... I would never paid full price for a piece like this, and to be honest not even 1/10 of its real value (in general for each badge missing hinge and catch).

Even missing the edge this is a bad sign IMO. Especially when we have had a member buy all three grades of the field gray patches as fakes for $35.00.
                            Looking for a 30 '06 Chauchat magazine.

Another observation (perhaps relevant, perhaps not) is the stitched edging on the Staegemeir example was not cut off but rather was never applied in the first place. You can tell by the amount of material between the obverse feature and the margin.

                              Best regards,
