Here are two examples of the "favoured type" from past dealer offerings, one from Niemann and one from Weitze. The white stitching on the reverse is the same for the two of them but considerably different from the ones in the previous post.

These differences in stitching and backing material make it difficult to even define what is the "favoured type" let alone what might be made in wartime.

    Best regards,

Great photo montage Norm! Lots of differences there. It is a shame we know so little about these badges.
      Looking for a 30 '06 Chauchat magazine.

Do we really know, that the few groupings containing a sniper´s patch, really are "untouched". It´s very easy to add a patch to a vet´s grouping.
If we shall follow the "logic" no dug ups, no vet´s finds... How do we know what an original sniper´s patch shall look like?
Were any handed out? As far as I know, there is no photo proof of that.

          Hi Ludwig,

Correct, that's the point of the 24-page thread. None of the three groupings discussed were ironclad -- hence the term "favoured" rather than "accepted". How the patch should look in general is based upon the obverse design shown in the "Muster" drawings in the Heer, Luftwaffe and Marine Verordnungsblätter of late 1944 and early 1945. There are no verifiable clear photos of the patch in wear which is why the evidence is even poorer than that for the Kleinkampfverbände patch (for which there are several photos).

That part is all discussed before; the part that hasn't yet been explored is the subtler variation within the so-called "favoured type" that raises further questions as to whether those were all produced at the same time.

          Best regards,
          ---Norm
