    If all these badges were wiped down with vaseline, which alot of collectors and dealers do, it will give a similar glossy appearance even if the bronze finishes aren't exactly the same color.

    Its always hard to tell finishes with pics alone, it would be good to get a few of these in hand to try and figure this out. The fact that they are all minty-looking does seem odd. But with that said I really like the look of the bronze finishes and I do see a slight difference in the color and shade between the Heer examples shown.

      I understand what you are saying about badges wiped down with vaseline. It is done to arrest zincpest and make a worn badge look better than it actually is, However, none of the pictured badges would need that enhancement or cover up. Putting vaseline on one of these would make it more gaudy than a true mint example IMO.

        Well, we don't really know what these badges looked like before they were posted on the website Chet, so how do we know they weren't bathed in vaseline to clean them up? I wipe most of my badges down with vaseline mainly to protect them, but it also will bring a bronze badge to life, even if there is very little bronze finish remaining. These badges could have just been dirty, and when wiped down with vaseline just made the bronze finish pop out.

        In particular, look at the Juncker CCC. Its not mint, it has zinc peeking through the worn high points. This is overshadowed by the shiny bronze finish, which looks a bit un-natural but in hand I bet it would look fine. The wear is totally believable; it doesn't have the look of being refinished, and then buffed up to give it artificial wear IMO.

            Of course we don't know what the badges looked like before hand. However, now they all share the same finish. Different awards and different makers and yet they all look the same? As the old saying goes, "there is something rotten in Denmark and its not the cheese"

              The lacquered bronze finish on the IABs besides the wiedemann look absolutely good to me. I have seen lots of makers use a finish like this and they do seem all subtly different. JFS, MK4... Many others too, their bronze finishes seem very similar.

              Some are obviously bad but I don't think it damns all the other badges.

                Hi Guys......

                ......I am going to agree with Chet and Daniel. There is something very suspicious about such a wide variety of makers possessing what appear to be nearly identical finishes. If these images are all products of the same camera then it really narrows down the chances of these finishes being 'polished' up IMO.

                However, as Tom has mentioned, a in hand inspection could reveal a lot about them.

                  I agree there is something odd, but looking at them at a case by case basis, the finish matches fairly well to the expected finish and would be considered perfectly fine on their own threads...,

                    That's a good point, and I can see now that's a reasonable explanation of what's happened to the Schwerin KM badges. The reverse on these Schwerin Tombak badges is supposed to be a chemically oxidized/darkened metallic layer which has a slightly granular texture. I can see how vaseline may cause it to be shiny and more variable in its reflective properties. In fact, it creates an undesirable effect on the reverse of these badges.

                    That doesn't change the fact that the R.S.&.S. zinc Fleet badge was flagrantly refinished. There are also two fakes in the KM section but I realize that can happen on any dealer's site and is off topic.

                      Sorry Guys, I'm getting forgetful. You can scratch the R.S.&.S. off of this discussion of refinished badges since it's actually a high-end reproduction. I'd forgotten that we'd already discussed this one before as a fake here:
