Hello, I've both this pic because I collect GBJ pics but my question is...what badge is he wearing?

Heerbergfuhrer Badge

The badge looks like a Heer bergsfuhrer badge. If I am not mistaken, this badge was issued to soldiers who met certain criteria in mountaineering, and orienteering.

Most possible this badge is the type worn on the uniform. I have a period piece that was removed in Austria from a German being worn on his service tunic. The badge shown is a current award as the organisation is still inexistance and awarding long service badges. There is one hotel in Myerhoffen were the club meets to-day.

can you give me any more information regarding this badge i believe the organisation was founded in the early 1900s and that as you say it is still running i dont know about the age of my badge apart from it is made by deschler of munchen and i bought it from detlev .

I can not help you more than say that the award is continuing to-day. The age of your badge is hard to determin as they are still awarded. The one I have and is period 1940 is in silver and numbered with the name of the recipient stamped on the reverse. I hope this helps. The only way is to contact the Club itself. They may keep records.

The badge on the picture is not a Heersbergfuehrer badge. A Heersbergfuehrer badge is more oval shaped than the one on the picture.

It looks to me like a civilian Bergführer badge. The photo seems to be pre-war or very early since he doesn't have any military awards. Not uncommon to see this with the Gebirgsjägers. I may have some photos showing this badge more clearly. Will have to dig around my Alpenhütte this evening a see what I can come up with for you.

Nice German Alpine Club 25 year membership badge!!! I think the GJ in the photo may be a little young to have that unless he joined when he was born!!
Pre-Anschlüss badges had DOeV in the center of the Edelweiss for the German-Austrian Alpine Club. During the war it was changed to DAV for the German Alpine Club, which still exsists today. After the war, Austria changed to OeAV, which would be more likely the one that the Mayrhofen section belongs to. Love skiing and climbing there and on the glacier at Hintertux, Tirol, especially during the spring and summer.

Oh, so that's what it is.. This thread reminded me that I had this, somewhere.
I think it came in a group of 'tinnies' ... if original, why the different coloured enamels?
