Please help, is this one a good Berg & Nolte? The double stamping on the reverse just looks weird...

      Hi

For me this is one of those badges that from just seeing pics, it is not so simple to be so sure.

Attached is one from my collection with the same hardware set up for you to compare.

I have not seen the double stamping so pronounced as on yours, but it is evident on many "B&NL" IABs, so that in itself would not be a worry.

But yours does not have that nice "aged" appearance and the hinge and catch are not usually appearing so sloppily attached. The reverse also seems to have a profile that is a little rough in places.

Let's see what others feel about it.

      regards
      Graeme

Thanks, Graeme. The finish is very uncommon on this one, I have only seen solid zinc examples with very faded silver finish, quite dark. This one has a bit of copperish/goldish silver on the bird and fades to darker grey. I have only seen this kind of fading on hollow zinc B&NL variants. Size is 62x47mm, weight 31.04g. Here's a scan, maybe it shows better details:

          Hi Guys

I agree with Graeme's evaluation and I too find this one is difficult to authenticate.

For me, the prevalent double stamping we see here is something I have only seen on questionable B&NL solids - marked 43 on the reverse.
These 43 badges also have the same excessive solder "splash" we see on this one.

First, Here is my B&NL with inserted hinge that for the most part matches Graeme's example.

          Best Regards, fischer

Here is the B&NL marked 43 example. Notice the similar indentations that run along the rifle reverse.
