Hi Don. I've got two varieties of this badge. The key thing to look for is that the area between the swastica and the grenade and bayo is not cut-out. Also notice that the eagles wing "shoulders" are are a little thicker compared to other badges and there is a distinctive crease line below the shoulders.

          Late War One

          Hi Guys,
I have a later war one - If you look under the right wing (as you're looking at it) you'll see a hole where the material was thin. It's not "cut out", but it does have a void there. I do agree as a rule that this area is normally solid - but lets not send out the wrong signals that just because there is some sort of void in this area because of material thinness that a badge such as this should be frowned upon and looked at with suspicion. The phrase "cut out" could get misinterpreted.

Eric, I think your badge is really more of an odd exception. I noticed that it is also missing a good portion of the beak as well. As a rule, Frank and Reif badges should not have cut out areas like other makers of General Assault badges. This doesnt include die imperfections. By looking at the badge as a whole, one would see that the other side wasnt "voided", so this rule holds true.

PS, the above badge posted by Yuri now resides in my collection. Thanks for posting it Yuri. (I havent got around to snapping pics of it yet)

                Right

                Hi Mark,
Yes, I too believe it is the "odd exception". I have one so I'm sure there are others. That's my point here - the "rule" DOESN'T include die imperfections, but yet it is the rule of thumb.
I just don't want to give anyone new here to the collecting community any tunnel vision that's all. I wouldn't want anyone to turn up their nose at a "odd" original piece such as mine because it doesn't follow the given "rule". There are or in most cases always exceptions to the norm. We pretty much know that as experienced collectors but the novice may not take that into account. A lot of information we share here people take and set in stone.
