    Egghead IAB in bronze

    Hi guys,

here I would like to show you my new Egghead IAB in bronze.
It's the first time that I see an Egghead IAB with this type of hinge, but I can't see any signs of a repair. The colour of the bronze finish is the same on the badge as on the solder of the hinge. It looks just a little bit differen ton the picture, because the two areas reflect the light a little bit different. On the top of the hinge there is area with some scratches as well as on the left wing of the eagle. There the bronze finish is very bright, but it does not look repaired in my opinion.
    What so you think?
Thanks in advance for your comments!

    Best regards
    Sven

          Hi Sven

I agree the hinge is not typical for an egg head iab, but I also agree with you that it hasn't been repaired.

              BEAUTIFUL egghead bronze!!!!
              I want it so badly.

My opinion on the hinge, comparing it to my silver egghead, is that they somehow damaged the base of the hinge during manufacturing. Instead of using a new hinge base, they simply bent out the two layers of the hinge, and cut off the excess/damaged area. Your hinge is a tad shorter than a standard because of this. This way they didn't waste the hinge base when it was still usable. (IMO) The rest of the construction of the hinge and pin are typical for egghead.

regards.. and again, this badge is stunning in my eyes.

                Hi Sven,

I like it too, the finish seems to be all over the hinge and pin making me confident it was all done in the factory.

The bright area looks like something brushed against it, and filed some of the dark bronze finish away, making it brighter (or revealing a lighter bronze base coating). It seems that whatever brushed against the top of the hinge also hit the wing, also rubbing some dark finish off in that area too.

                Tom
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

                  Hi Guys,

Am I correct in my assumption that this zinc badge has a copper/brass galvanic undercoating upon which the bronzed finish was applied? It seems I'm seeing the coppery tones of the undercoating on the worn areas of the obverse and that also accounts for the colour in the scratched areas above the hinge that Sven noted.

That would certainly fit with the recommended method of production published in May, 1942 in the trade journal "Deutsche Graveur Zeitung und Stempel-Zeitung" that Andreas posted previously here:

                    Hi Sven

I think there is a good chance that the hinge is original to the badge.

Your badge appears to have a mottled bronze appearance (various shades of bronze).

                    regards
                    Graeme
