      I really wonder why the change, and what was the reason?
      But ofc, if you have a controversial badge, you might want it to be real.
      So that is why you ask for proof that it is fake, and not the other way around.

        I had heard about an entry in a soldbuch for the award of the snipers badge,
        but I don't recall any further details. I had also heard that award entries for the snipers badge were entered in the soldbuch, but the actual badge was never presented...
        Is it possible to enlighten me further about this incredible find?
        Is this the only known provenance?
        I would greatly appreciate any information.

            I owned the Weissinger group and Soldbuch for many years until I finally switched everything to collecting LAH exclusively.

            Looking back I was never sure whether the badges had actually been a part of the group right from the begining. I doubt it honestly.

            The snipers I personally knew never got the actual badge, only SB inscriptions or award certificates if at all. Mostly they had only learned about the award post-war.

            Personally I would probably not add any badge to my collection anymore and certainly not any of the ones shown here on this thread.

              Thank you very much for this post and clarification on the sniper badges with the group. I was just about to ask how do we know if they actually came with the group. I agree with you, there are really no proven original sniper badges at all, just the accepted badge at the moment.

              I have the embroidered sniper badges I got years ago and one of the now accepted versions. I will never even think about acquiring another, as I don't believe in them at all anymore.

              I worked with an SS sniper in Germany many years ago. He told me after so many kills, he would receive the Knights Cross. He never mentioned any sniper badge.

                  In the linked thread, Jacques confirms that the badges were not with the grouping, but added later on (post #21).

                  So do we know of any groupings where these sniper patches came from the vet? If not, how do we determine which ones were actually made during the war?? Detlev shows 2 different variants in his book, neither of which match the example Patrick shows as the "accepted version".

                    Tom, PvL confirmed in the trhead that the Gold (3rd) version was with the group when he got it. Post 24

                      The only badges that came with the group when I purchased it from Peter in 2003 were the IAB (with broken catch) and a sniper badge (basic grade, not gold).

                      It is a great group, but the bottom line is that there is no proof of what badge/type is actually real. Only us collectors believing, assuming...no facts however.

                            It seems that my aversion to adding one to the collection is justified.
                            Perhaps ironclad provenance will turn up in the future that will confirm or refute the opinions/assertions presented here.
