    Hi Tim,


    what also works very good is to apply a little more of vaseline and carefully heat it up with a hairdryer till it liquifies, so the vaseline can crawl into all the recesses. I usually leave it on the badge for a couple of days before you can carefully wipe it off the badge.

        This really works as I have done 100's of times on all types of old zinc pest ridden badges and other things made out of zinc.I think you did a great job on your very nice badge.

                  Your BKA turned out beautiful Tim and you surely kept a great piece of history from eventual demise.

                  And to say that in the early 80's when I parted with a large portion of my collection for "family priorities" the first to go where "zinkers" in the stupid beleif that they would eventually turn to dust on me and I could always replace them with better tombac specimens later ! All were in great shape just somewhat faded and some were blistered a bit. Bronze & Silver BKA, Gold CCC, Late Assmann A- L/64 Para and many others I would be hard pressed to replace now were sacrificed to ignorance!

                      I started using vaseline over 40 years ago and have never had a bad experience. You must control the humidity ( prefer less than 30%) and I keep the treated medal away from circulating air (under glass or in a case) as the dust in the air will settle on objects and carry contaminates that will attack the surface over time.

                        It does look much much better & took 70 years to get like it was, so if you can live for another 70 years I still dont think it will have turned to dust.
                        Come to think of it we will have turned to dust before that badge does.
