    AS in Triangle IAB

    Hi Guys

    It's been too long since I posted something new so I thought I would show this recent addition from the Gablonz area.

    This (6) vein AS in triangle is a nice silver grade with a flat back reverse.
    Most AS examples I have seen have the semi-hollow recess in the rifle area.
    The obverse finish is slightly worn but still has that chrome sparkle in hand.

    The silver grade AS IAB's can be difficult to find with the obverse finish intact.
    For some reason the flat, grainy reverse coating would adhere to the base zinc and is usually found in nice shape but, the chrome looking electroplate on the obverse did not always hold up as well.

    As Jordi and Sven know, I have chased after a flat back variant for a awhile.

        Thanks for the reply and yours is a nice AS as well.

        But, if you look closely at the 1R leaf you will see yours is a (5) vein example.
        Yours also has a slight recess in the k98k butt stock and the bayonet reverse.

        It has been my experience that when one comes across a bronze grade AS, it is usually a (5) vein example.

            Hi Don,

            Very nice example you have there. I hadn't noticed the 6 vein/5 vein difference in the AS in Triangle IABs, thanks for sharing that info. All the examples I have on file are the 6 vein variety, can you show a few more 5-veiners? How many variations of these AS in Triangle badges do you think there are?

              There are several different variations of the AS in Triangle IAB if we take into consideration all attributes.
              Obverse design, semi-hollow or flat back, different styles of maker mark, ball hinge and catch as well as the (5) vein / (6) vein in the 1R leaf position already mentioned here.

              There are three "Types" when looking at the obverse design details;

              Type or Die 1
              This is a (5) vein variant with the obverse details matching the MK in Triangle design right down to the die flaws in some of the leaf veins. Because of this, I would say the same obverse Die had to be used for both examples. If we compare the awards production output of the two, it is most likely AS provided the assistance to MK. Whether AS gave them the die or actually manufactured the badges for them is not known.
              To me, this AS / MK connection is just another example of Gablonz "Arbeitsgemeinschaft" collaboration and probably the reason the triangle symbol is part of the maker mark.

              Type or Die 2
              This is also a (5) vein variant but the wreath leaf details have a slightly different design from the Type 1. The example that Andy posted is a Type 2. This variant can be found with the flat stock catch or a round wire catch. To date, I have only seen the Type 2 in bronze grade.

              Type or Die 3
              This is the (6) vein example. It is the most prevalent and can be found with a flat or semi-hollow reverse. Finish varies from the chrome electroplate to a type of frosted finish.

              Here is a Type 2 (5) vein example I have; it differs from the one Andy posted having a round wire catch.

                Nice pieces Don! Never thought there would be so many examples of AS, but looking at the PAB's it totally makes sense!
