The pics are not the best, but I agree with Hans, it looks like other examples of this particular variant, but with some damage or die issue.

Wiedmann IAB

Hi:

I have various IABs and many other badges by Wiedmann...and they all have a pin assembly base which is different from your's. The base is a divit or indent in the base plain. Since I haven't seen one like this ...a few red lights are going off. When you throw in the head problem...another red light. I could be wrong but are there other examples out there in other collectors' collections like this??? For me thumbs down.

On ones I've seen in person, it seems to me the emblem of the maker is more up and down than this ....(turned to the right)......I am not sure on this one.....looks kinda iffy to me. As for the head ....it would be interesting to see the back of the eagles head to see if it has been ground down and left tool marks....or what ,as the condition is like it was never worn IF its good. (we haven't gotten past the doubt yet in my mind...) maybe someone can enlighten as to its true originality or not ...

Yes you are right about the angle of the maker mark, and this type with the sheet metal hinge and directly soldered catch all appear to share this. There are several variations of maker mark on Wiedmann IABs and not all are orientated in the exact same direction.

This particular type of Wiedmann IAB has been discussed in depth a long time ago, and I believe thought to be ok. Maybe a search will find the thread. The ones discussed did not have the deformed head by the way.

Could you please try and explain in a little more detail. You may have a valid point but I can't grasp quite what you are trying to point out, and I would like to.

I have a PAB, two (2) IAB, black wound badge and Luft Flak badge all by Wiedmann and all have the catch assemblies and the pin assemblies are the same as this one in the above posting...so when I see different assemblies..lights start going off. I didn't notice the angle of the hallmark...so that was a good catch.

As with most German makers especially those with hallmarks ...the German makers wanted precision and accuracy...attention to detail. I personally think "sloppy" work/workmanship didn't cut it. Now if they sub-contracted their work out or had other makers make items under their name and allow them to affix their hallmark...hmmmm. I'd also think that they'd have to apply to the same standards....regardless.

I agree with you that Wiedmann marked badges predominently have the set up that you reference. But there are known examples of marked Wiedmann badges with variant hardware, including rectangular sheet metal hinges, round wire catches, and also wide pins. There are also further variations in set up on badges thought to be Wiedmann but are unmarked.

@ Edelweisse: You're welcome. After reading your response I had a look at the link again. I missed something that I would like to revisit.

On the bronze badge in the link look to the lower right area(between 4 and 6 o'clock) of the reverse side of the IAB, and you'll notice two(2) die flaws that are visible on both badges.

As for the missing material on the back of the eagle's head perhaps there was a bit of dross stuck in the die. I cannot explain the notch that seems to be in the eagles wing(to the left of the head from the back).
