    'white bloom' on my IAB :(

    Hi,
    a year ago a bought a IAB at ciney.
    I was really happy with it but when I got home, I saw that there was a light 'white bloom' between the edges of the oakleaves and on the sides of the k98.

    But now, 1 year later, it became worse.
    I have read that it's was from to much sunlight.

    WHAT CAN I DO ABOUT IT?

    Hi Gilles, it sounds like "zink pest". You need to treat it now to stop it getting worse. Use some Vaseline on it. Do a search on zink pest on the forum about this problem.

      It is most likely a reaction of between the Zinc in the badge and the Oxygen in the air to form a Zinc-Oxide layer on your badge. This reaction is corrosion, and zinc forms an oxide layer whereas iron forms what we call rust. Keep it stored in an airtight box with a packet of silica beads to absorb moisture.

        Idon't think its zinkpest.
        I will give a qoite from christopher ailsby book.

        'On occasions, whilst on display, sliver meals have acquired a white 'bloom'.This has been shown to be a result of photochemical degration of the original silver chloride patina, formering powdery mettalic silver.'
