    award metals used

    Hello all,

What are some of the ways that you guys check for the metal of the award? Is there any techniques that I don't know about? How do you know what metal was used?

Please let me know either way. Thank you.

    Hi William,

To really know the difference, some of the finish must be missing.
Typical metals used in badge construction were tombak bronze and zink.
There were varying types of each.Zinks especially.
Tombak is non magnetic and is actually a variation of brass(copper and zink) and is basically the same colour, with a bit more of a brown tinge.
Zink is non magnetic, comes in a varying range of types, including quality feinzink through to latewar kriegsmetall(potmetal). It ranges from light gray(feinzinks and medium grade zinks) through to an almost black blue in the case of kriegsmetall.

Nickel silver was also used, which can be magnetic, in alloys with a high nickel content.Low nickel content alloys are non magnetic.Nickel silver ranges in colour from a frosted looking dull silver to a highly reflective silver(depending on the quality of alloy).

Cupal, which is aluminium with a copper jacket was also used.Non magnetic, and the copper colour below the surface finish is a giveaway visual indicator.
Aluminium on its own was used as well.Typical frosted silver colour(unpolished) and light weight.Non magnetic
Steel was used in the case of black wound badges, magnetic and is an obvious dull metallic silver colour.

    regards Keifer

      Metals

      Hello,

Thank you for the fast reply.

CAN ANYONE OUT THERE GIVE PHOTOS? I am looking for some photos of:

      TOMBAK BADGES

      BRONZE BADGES

ZINK, in different grades, and noted as such.

      NICKEL SILVER

      CUPAL

      ALUMINUM

I would like to have the photos to compare the metal examples, colors, texture, ect. I know I don't have the badges in hand, but I think this could really help. Thank you.
