Nasty fake with the JFS logo pushed off to the right. Certain characteristics in the die that don't measure up to original JFS, namely the eagle head. I think these were done in a white metal alloy of some sort because the metal looks smoother, and the finish, therefore, brighter. Notice the really, really bright scan... IMO, an effort to cover up some of the "indicators". I've learned to avoid sellers using that tactic, even on "good" badges.

I disagree with you there Scott because not all "collectors" buy the books or have even laid their eyes on one. This would have been a "dangerous" fake 10yrs ago, and, if it showed up on Ebay around midnight, someone might bite on an "attractive" Buy it Now. Bright scans like this don't help either.

A fool and his money are easily departed, and I agree with you're point highlighted. They are also paying through the nose on well made "regular" badges, like that new S&L brass based PAB, recently discussed --and it's been raking in 100euro+, on a regular basis, in that "popular auction site", among others. Nobody has any business paying for a fake, but there's a market for these types of badges geared towards those "willing to take a chance". Those bright scans are like an extra sucker punch. If you compare how the fake below is being made now, compared to how it "looked" 10yrs ago, you'll see that it's geared toward the "type" that wants "minty" (curious because "minty" is so "popular" here), and we all know what a mint 25 PAB would bring right?? Wrong, because it's what the collector is willing to pay?? When was the last time we "discussed" prices on these things? We don't. Why? And, in some cases, the answer given is: "Go compare dealer prices"????? And you wonder how they get rich?

True however you know that there are two sets of prices for this hobby, a dealer price and a so called after market price ( estand in some cases auctions flea market etc) one being slightly higher than the other but people that are in the market for these things should know a price range for what they are buying unfortunately most don't

And how does one go about pricing then, based on "condition"? You can't either way. One way or another, the Buyer ends up forking it. That's how it is in collectibles. BTW, I don't collect the #'d badges or the PAB, so you might include me in the mix of those having "no business", but I collect some stuff, sure. My business and nobody elses really, but I pay $25 a year here. Has it been worth it? It's a hobby and $25 bucks is pretty cheap discussing stuff that's worth a $hyt-load.
P.S.: I've never, after soooo many threads discussed Dealer VS. "aftermarket" prices, on or offline. Is this common terminology among "high end" collectors???

Reguardless of price, wether it be a dealer, e-stand, or good buddy these things are expensive. No matter if you are a serious collector or not, one must do due diligence before purchase. I am sure we all agree on this. The badge in question has been around for a long time and should fool no one. As for the bright scans, we see that all the time. Even on good examples. Not everyone is adept with a scanner.

Should fool no one What an arrogant answer. I think my decision on whether to renew my membership here has been answered. Obviously, nobody discusses the important stuff in these threads and then try to rub your face in their "so called" knowledge? I would hope someone asking 1000s of bucks on these things would be proficient with a scanner and has the ability to play with the contast, like in the pics below eh Chet?
