Very nice GAB, and I can only agree with the others that its a fine original. As Giel says, these are known as the "Deep Pan" as the maker is currently unknown.

IMO these are not that rare, but to find them in a great condition like yours is difficult.

Well I am no expert on badges for sure, but I was reading a thread the other night.. I saw that the round base for the catch is considered Deumer if snipped across the top like that, so how is this maker unknown?

Hi WP,

Well, maker identification is a bit more complicated than a simple snip to the top of the catch plate. While it certainly can be an indicator toward a certain maker, it would never be conclusive because many firms purchased hardware from 3rd party suppliers so the same hardware was used by several different makers. Typically you have to look at several other indications in combination before you can point in the direction of a certain maker (such as hinge, hingepin, hinge attachment style, main pin type, tool mark on the pin, shape and size of the catch, obverse design of the badge, etc, etc.). The combination of these items is where the power lies in identifying badge makers.

As to your particular point about the snipped catchplate, there are several makers that I can think of offhand that used this in addition to Deumer (Juncker, Wiedmann, etc.). So that alone could never be used to identify this certain type of GAB. And unfortunately, there just isn't enough other indicators on these "Deep Pan" GABs to link it to a certain maker. But the fun of this hobby is that we don't know what lies around the bend, so I am confident the maker will be identified one day.
