    Weekend PAB Finds

Found a couple of nice PABs at a local gun show. It's rare to find nice and reasonably-priced badges at any shows in central Florida, so I was happy!

First off, a hollow Assmann PAB in silver. It's quite lightweight (11.8g), and is a Cupal badge. Almost no wear.

The second one is a hollow Frank & Reif Buntmetall.

This one has the round-wire catch.

P.S. Maybe the best part of all - each of these was $70!

$70.00 I am more than a little jealous, I never find PAB's. I'm always looking for them and that's probably why I never find them, and instead I have a cabinet full of IAB's. Either way you gotta love the hunt. Greg

                  Dear Greg,

What absolutely wonderfull finds, congratulations my friend.

Your first one is indeed a kupal Assmann an without a doubt the best I have ever seen. Absolutely amazing to see how bright the silver color is. The weight is the give away here, BM and zink badges will easely put 4 to 8 grams more on the scale. Even on this mint badge I can see the glow of copper underneath the picture of the obverse you posted. Because the badge is in such good condition you just can't see the two layers they are completely covered by the intact finish. Please don't scratch it now to go looking for them.

Your second badge is also a very early BM PAB. IMO this is not Frank & Reif but BH Mayer. Can't proof it yet but I'm sure one day I'll find the missing link.

And the price, well what can I say, finds like these are what keeps us going. Both badges are extremely desirable PAB's and would have cost you a lot more then €500 when you had bought them from Winkler, without shipping cost ofcourse

Treasure the little beauty's Greg you should be proud of them.

                    Greg,

I just had to mention the prices, because that NEVER happens at shows around here, especially gun shows. From the same guy I also got cased gold and silver wound badges http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=67166

Just a couple of things that a small gun and surplus dealer had for sale. But he had fakes as well - fake PABs, IABs, and a Floch EKI. So I just picked the gems from out of the fake ones!

                    Regards,
                    Greg

                      Dear Philippe,

Thanks for the comments. On the Assmann the weight says Kupal, but it doesn't show the "sandwich" I'm used to. It does have a "wine-colored" discoloration on the front that I thought was just a discoloration of the silver finish, but maybe as you say it is the copper underneath peeking through - not from wear, but from discoloration of the finish.

These two were sitting beside ugly fake AWS (wrong crimps) and a fake semi-hollow F&R in the dealer's case.

                      Best regards,
                      Greg

                          Dear Greg,

Maybe you just can't see the sandwich because the finish is completely intackt arround the outside of the wreath.
The wine color discoloration indeed is also something I have never seen, I can only imagin that maybe this is the beginning stage of the reaction that is to typical for these Kupal Assmanns. On most badges it develops in to a very dark discoloration. Probably somekind of reaction between the finish and the copper underneath. Your badge must have been stored in an absolutely ideal environment preventing the reaction to occur.

Here is the reverse of my Silver Kupal Assman where you can clearly see that a large part is already turned dark.
