    Hi Shane,

Thanks for the better closeups. I like the finish better on these second pictures and the bayonet doesn't look as weird now. About the backplate, I thought that it could be a replacement also, you don't find a backplate with such rounded corners like this on originals. As Tom Y. said, the crimping is hardly holding the plate in, which is odd. The hinge and catch look to be put on as an afterthought, not really fitting the recesses. It could be a good clasp, but it gives me the impression of extremely late war, or just slapped together afterwards for a GI souvenier.

Overall, I think Frank is right and would not purchase this clasp. You can do a lot better with a more typical clasp and will be much happier with it in your collection.
If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

Hello Shane, Tom D., and Frank,

Looking at the second series of pictures posted, I am also more satisfied with the look of the base metal and finish. However, I still don't like the clasp for all the other reasons I originally stated. That closeup of the backing plate only confirms my suspicion. The only thing holding that one in place is glue, most likely. Definitely not a piece for my collection.
      Best regards! Tom

        Hi All,

IMO this is a fake. The backplate is not properly crimped in - although I guess this might not be the original backplate and rather a glued in repair job.

The one thing I always look for with CCC - before all else - is nice crisp lower corners to the central box and this one doesn't have them.
For some reason this is something that the copies never get right - check out an earlier post of mine:

Best off getting a known type...

          Hello Tim,

I agree with you on that point. The area directly below the backing plate is usually flawed on the fakes. Not symmetrical on the right and left, and lacking in crispness.
          Best regards! Tom
