Gordon and Frank.......do we know FOR SURE that this award was ever actually produced with diamonds? I have read some reference books that indicate that none were ever made. and - yes CollectRussia...it hurts my eyes too!

All the rest of us can do is speculate. In terms of the design however, Juncker used different tooling for the "deluxe" Close Combat Clasp than for the standard CCC. So, if they did make examples of the BKA with diamonds there is every possibility that it would have been from a separate die and so I would not necessarily say you could definitively class this as being wrong simply based on comparing it with the characteristics of the zinc version which could very well have come from different tooling.
Personally I don't think many people these days would think of investing in any diamond badge unless it came with a substantial amount of rock solid provenance.Comment

Most people who promote these badges as originals have one or two good dealer connections (with diamond badges on offer) too many for my taste. Anyway, it is out of my league and I find it quite silly to spend such an amount of money on something where you will NEVER be absolutely sure, even if I had the money and was bored.Cheers, Frank

Yes, it is one of the US collector´s most favourite mistakes. I bet even some books have it wrong. I admit it is not easy and confusing with the Junkers planes around in the same era. AND there is the German rank of Fahnenjunker (without a C), derived from the ancient "Junker", a kind of knight.Cheers, Frank
