Interesting, I've not noticed this before.

This shows the use of multiple dies. The reason why, we can only speculate.

In looking at the examples I have, only one has the (3) veins in the 1L leaf. It is a bronze grade, unmarked example like the others you show.

My L/56 marked examples, waffle and smooth crimped in hardware and the removed crimped, soldered in place hinge examples as well as the bronze grade, sheet metal hinge example from the hoarde find of 2008 all have the single vein 1L leaf.

I assumed multiple dies. Was it common by other makers for such a small change when another die was made? As far as I can see everything else on the two types looks identical.

You have really been studying these haven't you?

Well spotted, I too have not noticed this before, and I don't recall it being mentioned before. After checking my badges, they also fall into the categories that Fischer pointed out.

With so many variants (marked, unmarked, and the crimped versions) this design must have had quite a run and volume of badges, so for me more than one die is the likely answer. Other IAB designs also appear to have several dies, with minor changes to them. For examples, Ernst Muller and "RK" are notable in this respect, having small changes in the leaves.
