    Gebirgsjager Coin

    Hello,
Was wondering if someone knows anything about this Dietl coin. It's about one and a half inches in diameter and about 3/16 thick. On the obverse it says
"GENERAL ED DIETL / SIEGER VON NARVIK" and on the reverse "10 6 1940".
    Thanks

Probably post war, but the General is Dietl. He commanded the German (including Austrian) forces that invaded Norway. The Eagle (Axis) chasing the Lion (Britain) is what that represents. Narvik was a key stategic port with long Fjords. --Rgds, Ken

Can't say that i've seen one of these before, though a lot of Dietl memorabilia was made post-war i can easily see this being wartime. The German propaganda machine went into overdrive with the victory at Narvik.

A slight correction to the answer above. General Nikolaus von Falkenhorst commanded the German forces that invaded Norway. Dietl, who was commander of the 3 Gebirgs Division at the time, commanded 'Gruppe Narvik', the ad-hoc composite force based on GJR 139 and elements of all three services that first landed, then defended Narvik and the area around it from attack by troops from four different nations. The irony of the reverse of the coin is that it was only the Norwegian troops that had to capitulate on the 10th June because the British, Poles and French had all pulled out, leaving them high and dry with no alternative other than to give up. A bitter pill to swallow as Dietl's forces were beaten.
