    Clarification of term please...

    Hello All,

Can someone please help me by clarifiying what "die struck" means in terms of war badge construction.

For example, on the Army flak badge page, it says "Any die struck badges should be looked upon with suspicion".
I looked on the badge construction technique page and the three methods described are, die stamping, die forging and die casting. Which of these does "die struck" refer to?

    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian.

    Adrian,

I was trying to remember who wrote the article...without looking back, I would say it is talking about die stamping.

      Hi, I wrote that one.

Die stamped = stamped from a thin sheet of material, i.e. a black wound badge or hollow IAB

Die Forged= stamped from a thick piece of material which has been heated red hot to make it maleable. Early Luftwaffe badges were made this way

Die cast= a mold is used to form molten material into an image, then the image is trimmed around the edges with a cutter. Most late war zinc badges were made this way because the material was too brittle for the other two ways. Many cheap metal objects are made from die casting, to include Hot Wheel cars

I didn't mean your article Andy, I meant the Army Flak one.
