Here are some pictures. Some with direct light, some indirect in a light box. (Wasn't sure which would prove help in this case.) If you need something specific, let me know and I will take it.

    Thanks

With these clear close-ups, I now echo Tom's opinion. The badge has been buffed to a high sheen on the obverse. Reason: Lack of detail on virtually every high point (ie. the chest, talons, acorns and higher details on the leaves etc.). The "patina" may be artificial since we are looking at a polished up zinc base metal that doesn't tarnish like silver or nickel silver. IMO, the tarnish was applied by holding over a flame, until blackened, and then wiped leaving a faux tarnish in the recesses. The black from the soot would catch the "dry" areas of zinc in the recesses where the buffing couldn't reach. The reason I know this is because I tried it waaay back when on a badge that lost most of the finish anyway. So, artistically, very well done!

PS. The process I just described would also explain the dark/burnt "look" to the hinge block, needle pin etc. on the backside.

Nice forensics. I will add 10% to the cost if I ever sell it for this enhanced artistic processing !

This explanation works for me. Any other thoughts? I guess if I took side shot, if it was thick coating, we would see it as built up layers.

            thanks,

Actually Pat, if you could post some clear close-ups of the backside, with a focus-view of the hinge and pin, that would be cool.
