    Early silver PAB finish.

On this early stamped/hollow PAB, the heavily worn areas (i.e. treads and coax) indicate that the base metal is brass/tombak. However, the more slightly worn areas (i.e. the lower wreath band) almost look like dull zinc. Would this early badge most likely be made of tombak/brass with a silver plating that has oxidized a bit to a dark color? Also, this one appears to have a frosted outermost coating. Just trying to educate myself on the construction and finishing methods used. Thanks.

    Hi Matt,

I tend to agree with you. This looks to be a tombak/brass badge, with a silver plating on it. On top of that, was put on a frosted finish. The frosted finish was often burnished off of the highpoints to reveal the shiny silver, and this is what is likely oxidizing on your example.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

      Tom,

Thanks for the expertise. I know you've studied badge finishes extensively. I seem to have developed a "sickness" for these early stamped, brass/tombak badges. I have not purchased an early PAB in silver yet, but this one is a possibility. I recently picked up an early PAB in bronze and an IAB. The prices hurt a bit though.
