    Deschler IAB, opinions please...

    Hi guys,

I just received this unmarked Deschler IAB, at least I believe it's a Deschler. At any rate I would certainly appreciate your opinions as to whether it's an original Deschler. There is some yellow metal showing through on the top of the badge, copper under the silver plating I assume.

    Have a look, please...

    Robert

      Hi Robert,

Wonderful example and I completely agree with Andreas that I don't see anything wrong with it. Very deschler-like, with the characteristic furry feet!

      Excellent addition.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

          Hi Robert

          It does look very nice.

I can't see the copper undercoat that you mentioned, probably because of the lighting. This is one of mine that is much more worn than yours and hopefully shows what you are seeing.

          congrats

            Holy Crap Rob,
Great Deschler and in beautiful condition. I'm looking for one myself, but then there are a lot of IAB 's I'm still looking for.
I do see the brass color underneath on the upper wings and would think your correct, maybe a brass coated zinc?
            Great score bud.

Thanks for the photos, Graeme. I see more Deschler IAB's with the hinge base typical to yours. Mine, I can only find one other example in our archives with this 'square' base. Yours is still a very nice example.

Dave, I honestly don't have any idea what thin metal layer this is between the silver and zinc. Some say copper, some say tombak or brass. I just don't know for certain. Whatever it is Deschler put a little 'extra' into coating their IAB's to stand the test of time.

                Hi Robert,

both layers (brass and copper) could be possibile because both sorts of layers were used for the finish. As third possibility we have a protection layer over the silver finish called "Zaponlack".

It starts to get a yellow shining during the time.
                Best regards, Andreas

Is this 'Zaponlack' like Brennlack? I have a silver grade JFS nahkampfspange which has a brennlack finish and it has toned slightly as you mentioned.

                    Hi Robert,

                    no it's isn't the same:

Brennlack is the finish itself and was one method to get the finish on the badge.

Zaponlack is a unvisible layer which was "painted" on the allready finished badge as protection of the finish. During the aging Zaponlack starts to react and turns from invisible into "yellow".
                    Best regards, Andreas

Alright. Thank you, Andreas. So perhaps my brennlack-finished JFS nahkampfspange has a Zaponlack finish over it. Just a guess. Very interesting.

                      Thanks,
                      Robert

                        Hi Robert,

i think so because the Zaponlack was a common production practice during the time. Most badges do not have it anymore because the Zaponlack was lost because of wear and aging.
                        Best regards, Andreas

Yes, I had the lighting turned up a bit. Here's a more realistic photo showing the wear to the top of the badge, the yellow-colored metal showing through...
