Monster PAB question...

I was wondering about the setup of the "Monster PAB". Are these attributed to S&L? What about the "57 scratch" on the needle system?

.....Good question. I see you've been enjoying a trip through the archives. I did a bit of a look myself, and it was interesting to see the progression.

• At first these were so-called Zimmermanns.
• 3 years later they are S & L.

I couldn't find an explanation about the decision to attribute them to S & L, but I suppose the hardware had something to do with it, among other undisclosed reasons.

Now, using the theory of the 57 pin scratch being used to determine whether or not the badge is possibly post war, is IMO, a valid point to raise. However, one has to believe that the pin scratch is a valid issue. Frankly, I am still 'on the fence' about this one.

Looks like all of these have the 57 scratch. So are these considered to be postwar then?

Hi Daniel,

You may remember this thread, where I specifically discuss the "monster" S&L PABs, specifically starting on page 5:

I posted that thread and my 1957-scrape theory more than a year ago, and to this day I have not seen one single badge pop up that contradicts my theory that the 1957 scrape can be used to differentiate between wartime and postwar S&L badges. The monster S&L PABs indeed have the 57 scrape and I am personally convinced that these are post-war S&L products. Others will probably disagree, but the fact remains that these PABs have different obverse dies and do not fit in the production timeline of wartime S&L badges as laid out in De Bock's PAB book.

In my opinion, the S&L Monster PABs are post-war products. I won't touch them.
