        Hi guys,

well heres mine. I must say that I bought this as a copy but always had in the back of my mind that it looks pretty good. What always bothered me was the material that its made of and the somewhat sloppy finishing.

Ed, your not really suggesting that the flash/surplus material under the bayonet is just a photographic illusion are you?

What you are calling flash is the lip 90 degrees from the horizontal that was caused by a ever so slightly misaligned tool and die. ( Or caused by a tool that was repaired) If you look carefully you will see that this is where the shear marks begin and they end in the burr on the reverse. This burr was then filed away but it is still evident.

              Cheers, Ed

Ed, I know that. I just called it flash/surplus material for want of a better description. Notice that only our 2 badges seem to have it. This was one of the reasons why this badge has always been "suspect" for me.
Ed, you seem to be slightly perturbed by the fact that this badge is not a 100% authentic striking in my view. It is only my personal feeling and not any attempt at talking your badge down. I just find it disturbing when I look at it.

                  Skip,

It would seem to me that both of our badges were from the same production run. Also I think you're misinterpreting my intentions. The RS GAB is not a common type so muuch so that I would imagine that there were only a handful of production runs. I also notice that ours has a non pointed pin. The die seems to be the same as the others posted. It looks like all of the examples posted have a slight flaw in the bottom part of the "S".

                  Cheers, Ed

                    Hello Skip,
I like the look of your badge as much as the others that have been posted on this thread. I really don't see anything that you need to be concerned about on yours. What type of material do you feel that yours is made of? It looks to me like it has a zinc base when looking at the picture of the reverse. I think you bought yours as a copy because the seller probably subscribed to that well established and publicised myth that Frank has already mentioned. "That any Souval badge with rounded letters is a fake." It took me years to overcome this same myth. I believed it myself because of reading a single paragraph in a book by Angolia.
                    Best regards! Tom

Glad that you are not taking me wrong Ed. I always wanted to believe in this badge and the detailing and hardware sure fit to the accepted norm. I guess I was just lucky and a little paranoid.

Tom, yeh same here. Angolias was the first book that I had and I believed the round letters myth uptil I joined the Forum. Most annoying is that I had a RS UBoot with round letters that I sold for 20DM back in 1999. I guess we all grow with the hobby. How lucky we have this place to discuss such things.
Well I think I can rest easy with this RS now.

Hmm...good thing I held on to my GAB then, where did this "myth" (rounded R.S. letters = fake or post war production) originate then and why is it still being perpetuated? Do enough reputable dealers/people support this? Perhaps we should have a poll?

                          hey guys

Do you find that there are two casting lines near the top and bottom of RS, and these two lines are across the bage horizontally?

                          regards
