          Dies

Philippe, To answer the question of dies used we would need to answer a few questions.

          1. How many sets of dies would a company have? I would think at least two. What if you were filling a contract for 500 PABs and a dies was damaged? Logic says you should have a back up.

          2. Where did these dies come from? Larger companies would have had in house die makers or engravers but smaller companies would have had to buy thier dies from someone else. Unless these dies were all made from a mother die, which I don't think, then you will find variations from die to die due to them being produced by hand. I think we could confirm this by looking at the details of the obverses of all these manufacturers. The stipling in the wreath would be a good place to start.

          3. As for the detailed grassy area, is it possible to take your standard "trabbi" design and rework it to spruce it up a bit?

          4. Last thing to consider is that all trabbi designed badges were made under contract by a single company and the reverse die was changed out to reflect the mm/style of the contracting company.

Just a few thoughts to run through on a Sunday morning.

            Hello Greg,
Do you have a picture of the reverse of the R.R.S. that you posted?
            Best regards! Tom
            Hi Tom,

Here is the reverse of the one I posted earlier, with the more detailed grass area.

            Best,
            Greg

Can someone post a picture of a known fake RRS marked badge? I've been out of touch for a fe days, so perhaps I missed it in another thread.

I'll open Pandora's box - is this one fake? I'd like your opinions. If it's fake this is probably the best-faked back of a PAB I've ever seen. I've owned three R.R.S. PABs, and the backs and setups (including this one) were practically identical.

                  Regards,
                  Greg

I got called away from my desk and didn't get to post the front before.

What now? I'm sure everyone will see the two areas that concern me. This is also the one I mentioned that didn't "feel right," though that's very subjective...

                      Regards,

In my opinion ok, but the swastika has been messed with. Maybe the swastika was defaced and then "build up" again?
                        Cheers, Frank

                          Dear Frank,

That's the only plausible explanation I can come up with. It was almost like it had been entnaziert (sp?), and then a swastika put back on later. If so, it was a much better job than the average person could do.

                          Best regards,
                          Greg

Gregs is not a fake IMO. I have also had a couple of these. None of them seemed to have the right feeling. I sometimes think that RRS used a different type of material in their manufacturing process, not your normally encounted Feinzinc. Reverse setup looks spot on, especially I look for the oval shaped catchplate that seems to virtually disappear under the solder.
Swaz might have only been partially removed, then its not to difficult to flatten it out and make it look good again.
