Looking for opinions on this one. I believe it's a good 5 stem hollow S.h.u. Co. design, dirty and worn, but would like to hear other opinions.

What is the biggest tip off? Maybe I should have titled it S.h.u. Co. design. I know it doesn't match the marked hollow 5 stem, but other makers in Idar-Oberstein used the same design. Are we looking at a difference of metal used or is the hardware the tip off?

The base metal on this one is probably brass as you can see it peeking though the ?finish. This is the fake where the hinge and pin are part of the badge casting, but looks "right", even in hand. Very dangerous fake because it leaves even an experienced collector wondering if Heubach could have made a "buntmetal" badge.Comment

A big giveaway, is that the eagles feet always lack detail and are smaller by 1mm up and wide to the steel counterpart --and weigh a little less, but not by much!Comment

Well I don't have this badge in-hand and haven't taken a really close look at the hardware, pics are kinda hard to tall for me and about the eagles feet, it's really dirty so I don't know if it's just caked with dirt covering the detail or if it's just soft details. I have asked for more close up pics, but haven't heard back yet.

I don't know this guy is pretty honest, he gets a lot of his inventory on consignment and is not an expert in every area. And like you said it's really hard to tell with this one. I did see the bronze fake you had a while ago and it doesn't look to have the cast lines in the hinge, so we'll see. He may pull it after a more in depth look, but I think he'll send me pics. I was hoping you'd mention the bronze fake and made that connection because they are produced by the same faker. No, you don't see the lines on the hinge, but they tried to "correct" it. Don D. also had a panzer assault from the same pedigree waaayy back. Another GAB showed up recently here, which fooled nearly everyone until I noticed the casting lines. What was peculiar was the "one of a kind" eagle head on a RK body hollowback.Comment

The details on the obverse look pretty soft to me, and I also don't like the look of the finish or the reverse hardware either.
