*Fall 1944..... Reorganized and redesignated Heeres-Sturmartillerie-Brigade (Feld) 600

Why it was still named "Sturmgeschutz" in 1945?

Great grouping Giel, looks like all your hard work has paid off. Lovely #GAB, clearly an award that he received very late in the war given its pristine condition.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

A common thing to see units still being reffered to by older names.

The documents really make this group, and great job on researching the final months of this man's combat service. I think it is really nice that he kept the paperwork with the awards, albeit hidden (or at least not displayed).

The blackening of the names is a neat aspect of the whole Third Reich period. I've seen this many times, where family members attempted to obliterate the family name. The reasons were many-fold, and some of them would include:

                  - without knowing what type of witch-hunt the allies might undertake for former Wehrmacht soldiers and officers, reacting in panic with a pen

                  - immediate post-war shame and desire to dissassociate the family name from recent events

                  - hide Wehrmacht service from the East Germans / new communist bosses

                  - in the case of "criminal" organizations or conventional units associated with war crimes, hide their affiliation

I think most of these defacements happened in the first months or years of the post-war period. After all, these documents also proved service and wounds, which affected pensions for regular Wehrmacht outfits. These documents were needed to prove-up various entitlements, and the service member would want their name legible - they didn't know at the time what other back-up record the Bundarchive might have and needed to prove eligibility for state payments.

Just my thoughts - I think the blanked out names really add to the value, in a way. Magnificient group!

                  regards, Robert

Wonderful little grouping, Giel. It's a shame his Soldbuch did not survive - that would have brought a pretty penny

A big "Congrats" on scoring the group and putting forth the effort (and resources) to see that it be kept together Glad to see it has gone to a very good and deserving home!
