    Heer Shooting Lanyard Grade 2

    Hello everyone,

    I just received my second Heer Schützenschnur with acorn (2nd Grade). On comparing it with my first without acorn I see a couple of things that are odd to me. The size of the Beads below the shield and at the end of the lanyard and the weave pattern of the rosette.
    What do you guys think?

        Your marksmanship lanyard is an odd duck. In response to your questions:

        One, the large knots are too large from my experience.

        Two, the backing material is not what I expect to see and it is sewn on very sloppily.

        Three, the acorn looks okay as construction of these varies a bit from maker to maker.

        I would not be happy with this example.

          I think Marc Garlasco just did a wonderful research project on these lanyards, I would be interested to hear his opinion. I will shoot him an email and direct him to this thread.

            Hello Alan,

            I'm not liking your grade 2 lanyard either. Is there a protective backing cloth on the underside of the braided cord length? I would expect to see that, especially since this is a supposed early, first-pattern lanyard.

              The first pattern marksmanship lanyards were initially issued without the protective ribbon along the back of the long cord. About a year after the new lanyards came out, it was noted that the lanyards were causing wear to tunics so a directive came down in Jun 1937 to have an aluminum tape affixed to the back of the lanyard.

              However, it is common to find first pattern marksmanship lanyard examples without the protective backing.

                  The relevant Army orders concerning marksmanship lanyards are set out on page 19 in our book BULLS-EYE: German Army Marksmanship Lanyards and Tank Destruction Badges.

                  Starting about 3 years ago, high-quality repro Army marksmanship lanyards began to appear. These new repro lanyards are difficult to recognize for those collectors with minimal knowledge of the details of original lanyards.
