        Hello Gentlemen,

On the first example shown, I agree thye details are soft , especially with regard to the scaling. The scaling should be more detailed with that amount of finish left on the piece , so wear does not play into it.

I would also like to see a close up the skull, something going on their maybe. Finish looks good, until I see the close-ups.

Question: why would the details on the eyes bee so sharp and lacking on the scaling ?
The badge looks good, but some sutble issues. I like the hardware, sunwheel, hilt, hydras ( except the lack of scaling detail) and pin.

        Best,
        JD

Here is a better close up of the skull. What do you think looks out of the ordinary?

I agree that on the close ups, the scaling is not very detailed, same goes for the leaf veins. Would there be any signs of a casting on the sides or anywhere on the badge? Other than what we expect to see from a die casting?
            Cheers, Frank

I'm not sure what you mean by other castings?
              Here are more close ups.

Thank you for posting the additional pics.I think, and this is just my opinion, I think this badge displays much of what I would look for in an original example.

The problems that I have are still the same as mentioned in my earlier post.

                  - Soft details to the wreath as well as scaling. The scaling details should be their given the amount of wear exibited in other parts of the badge.

                  - The skull is very good, BUT, I would have some concerns on the left at 9 o'clock. As well as it looks as if that may be a pock mark their.

                  - The viening on the leaves is very soft, also looks like some signs of casting. What is that crack on leaf ?

In all fairness, are you using a flat bet scanner or digital camera .I know from my own experiences that capturing that detail is not the easiest thing .

Any chance of measurments and weights ?

                  Best,
                  JD

PS, I would not write this piece off yet.

The details are softer in the low areas that theoretically should have no/minimal wear.

                      Hello goochjr,

Well...................after looking at the post of the skull, I would say this piece is not an original example. The details are really not their as well as the softness looks like a hand cast piece. Sorry about that, but those are just my observations.

                          MMM dont like it either

I dont like the lack of scale definition either, not that i'm an expert by any means however I must say that when I recieved my bronze grade that has been discussed on the forum the level of detail really blew me away.

Hope that has been of some help

                            getting back to this

Finally have a chance to get back to this. I have circled the areas that cause me the most angst with this badge. They are low spots on the badge that should not show wear.

and the other side. Because of this I think this badge is a cast copy of an original. Weights and measurments should confirm or deny this.

                              JMHO.

I'll measure and weigh it as soon as time permits. Any specific areas you want measurements on?
