    Small w Wurster PAB

    PAB fans,

This one just in - the Buntmetall bronze massive PAB with the small w Wurster mark. This one seems to have a lighter shade bronze finish than what is usually seen on these badges (Philippe, this is the one you mentioned with the different finish). This certainly appears to be the original finish. The darker areas on this badge are worn areas, with the base tombak showing through. The tombak areas are not polished and so not a lighter color. The tombak is very similar to tombak wound badges I've had that weren't polished to a yellower color.

    60.0mm x 41.1mm, weighs 38.4 grams.

When I received it, I noticed what must be a die flaw on the back - a raised line running from the hinge down along the right part of the eagle's wing, on the back. There is no mark or flaw like this on the KWM marked massive Wurster badges I have. Is this on all the small w PABs? Philippe, I think I see it on yours (?)

    What do you think?

    Regards,
    Greg

The die flaw, if that's what it is. I lightened it some but it's hard to get it to show up. It's the raised line running from the top of the hinge at the right, down across the top part of the eagle's wing toward the right.

            Dear Greg,

            Very nice finish.
Looking at various Tombak Wurster PABs, the line you point out is not the one most of them have in common, I have seen it only on one oter Wurster BM PAB. It is more that smaller line I pointed out below which all of them seem to have in common.

                  Hi Jan Arne,

Yes, this is the one that was in Weitze's update, which means I paid an arm and a leg and my left nut for it (taking poor US dollar standing into account), but I was having no luck finding one in the States!

                  Frank,
Thanks for pointing out the smaller die flaw. It's not as noticeable on mine, but it's there.

Who else has one of these - does it have that flaw?

                  Best regards,
                  Greg

                      Dear Greg,

Nice to see it already arrived

Like I told you I was a little worried in relation to the bright looking gold finish on this example because besides the darker wash still visible on the reverse of your badge I don't expect to see any finish on these buntmetall Wursters. Underneath the wash you immediately have the base metall that is a quite shiny gold/yellow alloy.

However based upon the scans you posted I'm confident that the color pattern we see is the result of wear in combination with the badge being stored in damp conditions. The light brown discoloration of the buntmetall visible on the upper right oakleave, the left fender, the driving lights the rock and access panels, is typical aging on these buntmetall badges.

Altough not all "w" marked Wursters come with the flaw next to the hinge on mine it's even more visible and has the same shape.

So one more to strike from the shopping list and ready to start the hunt for the next one the buntmetall hollow Wurster in silver. Happy hunting

                          Hi Greg,

at last you get the elusive buntmetal, massive Wurster huh? and isĀ“nt this one heavy baby. One of my favorites to be sure.
When I get home I will have a look if mine has the flaw.
