    Brick red "thing" on badges

    Hi fellas,

Might not be the right forum to post this thread. I thought maybe other members like myself are interested to know what exactly are those brick red "thing" that are sometimes found on badges? I came across them on silver IAB, black wound badges, and now my latest bronze PAB.

    Hi Wunhur,

Really no idea what that could be.

I also have seen some strange stuff sitting on badges but than again don't forget that these are over 60 years old and in that time almost anything could have been incidental dropped on them at one moment or another.

The only natural developed stuff I ever found on these hollow Wursters is verdigris. But that was always green and not red.

My guess is that someone has used that particular badge as a master to make cast copies, and that the red "things" are remnants of the rubber mould (made of composite material, poured over the badge, that congeals after a while). I have also seen this on a few badges.

I found this on an IAB once. I could move it around with a toothpic. It had the consistancy of a red crayon. I put the badge under some warm water (a bit on the hot side) and worked it over with a toothbrush. The stuff dissolved away and the IAB looked like new.
