Heeres Flak - copy and a good one?

    Hello fellow collectors

Finnally I have become an association member with the right to post pics. For the last two weeks I have been studying the army flak badge. When i bought my own 3 years ago I didn´t realize how rare these are so it was with some nerves I began studying my own and comparing it with the informations on this site http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ht=Heeres+flak

My conclusions are that my flatback is a good one becaus of the high detailing, die struck, eagles head and expression etc. It measures 60 mm. high and 45 mm wide. Measured on the gun the badge is 4,8 mm. thick. It weighs 26,6 gr. It has traces of silver on the back (unfortunetly not visible on the pictures). The pin is magnetic. Compared to the copy its alot smother when you let your finger touch the back. The catch is a bit different than the others shown on this site. The badge shows signs of wear on all the right places. I would appreciate any comments you may have!

For reasons of studying/comparisson I bought a fairly good copy.
The copy is cast but very detailled its 59,1 mm. high and 44 mm. wide and weighs 33,1 gr. The pin is magnetic. Measured on the gun the badge is almost 5,9 mm. thick. The giveaways are the short neck on the eagle. The outer lines of the eagles wings have a curvey look insted of straight vertical lines. The catch turns the wrong way (is that seen on any originals?), It weighs too much and it too thick. It has craters on the back making it unsmooth when you touch it.

    Greetings Thomas

Fake on the right. Notice the cracks in the left one at the svastika and the tip of the left wing.

          Wrong placement

Sorry that I posted this the wrong place - is it too late or can it be moved?

          Greeting Thomas

            Welcome Thomas

In fact you are right the one on the left is a fake. These are very common these days available in a number of finishes as well as maker marks.

              Hi Thomas,

Nice hearing from you again after Stuttgart and congrats with your first post.

These are tricky little buggers but I agree with you that the first one you posted is OK and the second one a fake.

The best give aways on the fake for me are visible on the reverse pic you posted. There is a big asymmetri in the lower and upper wingtips, the gun barrel isn't smooth and the whole cut-out just looks very crude. I also don't like the reverse setup, reminds me of a certain "flatback PAB", and another of these copies can be found in this thread.

The other one looks ok to me, very nice detailing, and scary looking eagle.

Hi Thomas, I am sure your badge is good too.

Here is mine. I have shown it before on the forum, but it was not in the thread you linked.

                Cheers, Ade.

P.S. I am sure George will put the thread into the correct forum for you

Hi Thomas, give me a day or two to get you the measurments of the badge as I do not have it to hand. I do not have a scale though, so I cannot give you the weight.

I bought the badge around 1980. It cost me £45 back then. These badges have always been much more expensive than PAB, IAB's, etc which at that time I used to pay £16 each for.

The finish is actually a bit darker grey than the photo suggests as the flash has made it a bit brighter than in real life.

                      Cheers, Ade.
