GAB - Very Clean - Opinions Please

    Hi Everybody,

This zinc GAB arrived today and I'm curious what you all make of it.

As you can see it is in very nice condition; with only minimal rubbing to the highpoints, about 99% of the finish left.

The catch is interesting in that it is flat wire, similar to those often found on wound badges, and fixed to an attachment disc.

    Opinions welcomed and appreciated.

    All the best,
    Toby.

          Hi Toby,

Nice original example as far as I'm concerned. The catch is really un-common sitting in a half moon shaped recesse. I have this IAB by an unknown maker with the exact same setup. The little massive blockhinge is also something you don't see often on zinkers. I think chances are good that both badges were made by the same company.

                Hi Philippe,

Thanks for replying. I think you're right, they're related - the catch and hinge look to be pretty much identical.

Any idea as to a possible maker?

Does anyone else have badges with this hinge and catch?

                All the best,

                Toby.

I hope i´m wrong, but it looks like the award has been repainted ?

                  Cheers.

                    Dear Toby,

You will know best about the repaint issue holding it in your hands. All I can contribute is that this is a known type of GAB albeit by an unknown maker.
                    Cheers, Frank

I was thinking repainted when I first saw it.

                        Dear Toby,

I am sorry to say but from the pictures I would say a definitely resprayed badge. Picture #8 says it all.

                          Hi Guys,

Really can't image why you're all (with the exception of Frank) convinced that this badges is repainted. There isn't the slightest trace of wear visible on this badge accept for a couple of very light scratches on the highpoints. Also the color and texture of the finish is consitent with my worn IAB

Did the Germans use spraypainting on warbadges like this (IAB, PAB and GAB) ? If not, it is repainted.
Look at photo/post 8. Note the needle there. Under the needle you can see signs of spraypainting/repainting.

                            Cheers

                              Hi Everybody,

                              Thank you for the comments.

As for the issue of whether the badge has been repainted, personally, I do not believe that it has been. It is just in 'very' good condition.

Under a louupe you can see the 'inconsistencies' / deterioration in finish (as per the zinc Narvik Shield previously discussed). Also, the wear, as pointed out by Philippe is only to the highpoints. Had it been repainted you would see pooling of paint, and other problems - blemishes under the surface, etc. I think it is just that this has been stored very well all of this time. It came with, amongst other items, a near mint 65 Black Wound Badge, which just has the slightest deterioration to the obverse (again under a loupe), otherwise mint. I think it is as Frank has said, that with it in hand, and using a loupe, I can see that the finish is, as it should be. As a footnote, this badge has never previously been in the hands of a collector or dealer.

I'll try and do a really close picture of the surface shortly.

                              All the best,
                              Toby.
