I do also like photos much better than a scanner but for the most part its a lot easier for me with a scanner. I am just way too inconsistent with my lighting to be any good with a point and shoot.
Someone should do a little tutorial on how to get the correct lighting with the right ISO...I acutally think Marc did that once...
Here is my Junker with a regular point and shoot compared to the scanner...

Chris G.

Indeed, that camera shot of the PAB does look better than the scan. Beautiful badge

Yep, I think you are right Darrell. Chris, you need some green, deep plush, shag carpet to make it look like the panzer is crashing through the Ardennes

That is actually a nice 600 T/C Egyptian cotton hand towel...Just kidding...if I bought something like that I wouldnt be able to spend stupid amounts of money on the German sh!t!
For some reason I cannot duplicate that photo again...I dont know why? I take my photos in the bathroom because of the good lights but I have never been able to replicate that photo with any other badge.

Hi Chris
Congrats on the epson and some really fine scans. I have had an Epson 1250 for ages and I am still happy with it.. You can't beat a scanner for near top quality pics, ease of use and consistency, and for the usual front and rear postings that we are used to.
Saying that, the camera "professionals" in this thread, have posted some great pics also ..
cheers
Graeme

Decent pics.
Camera shots & scanner are not even comparable, scanners simply are not designed to accurately produce images of shiny, 3D metallic objects.
They tend to be washed out, over or under saturated, blurry around the edges, and lacking in color depth.
I buy & sell coins online, sales would most certainly suffer if scans were used.
They [cameras] can be a double edged sword though, as the tiniest flaw, not even noticeable to the naked eye, will stand out like a canyon in high res ,, But if someone was buying a coin in hand, they have a magnifying glass anyhow.
Not sure about the comment that photoshop is essential, I don't doctor my pics at all.
