      Hi Daniel, its 100% fake.
Materials are all wrong. So its both the photo and the badge that are copies.

      regards John

              Well, that’s a unanimous verdict!

I do value your opinions, especially since awards aren’t my field of expertise and I’m certainly not intending to wave your opinions and trying to be headstrong at the same time.

But please, if it’s so obvious to you all, why is it a bad fake? Compared to originals IMO the material and construction is correct and the same. Please bear in mind that the tank has been treaded with some kind of cleaning device leaving damaged traces at the band as well (you can see the color difference in a circle surrounded). I have this badge for at least 20 years and still have no real doubt of it being original but of course would always like to learn.

Therefore I would appreciate some more of an educational input.

              1. should the black band always have the lines faced going left?
              2. should there always be more space between the tank and the black band then in my example?

              Thank you.

              Frederik

IMO yes on both your questions, also look at the detail on the tank itself. Jacques

Okay, thank you Jacques, if that's the general consensus then I'll take my loss of course.
Actually I compared the tank with some pictures and did not really see much difference myself,.. I did not take it’s measures though; will do so later.

Could this be one of those Austrian copies then, knowing it's approx 20 years old at least?

In this 2008 thread I found a difference of opinion as the opposite weave of the thread has not 100% been proven as the sign of a fake, it's just because it would not be immediately accepted as original for not being textbook??

I understand a lot has already been written, so please excuse me for perhaps starting all over again.

Rather be sure of course before dismissing this badge to the bazaar…

I just checked the size: with respect to the tank; my example has the correct size according to what is mentioned in Breyette & Benders' book; the band is slightly smaller (obviously) and measures approx 8.5 x 2.8 cm.

Compared with some published photos in the book (i.e. on page 61, 64 and 66), the examples worn appear to have the tank indeed very close to the black borders just like this one. But still in general this is considered a red flag?

No disrespect intended, but I would really be interested in other opinions, moreover since the aging and oxidation is very convincing on my example to be simply ruled out as a fake based on an evidently by some already previously "disputed" textbook rule...

                      Thank you.

                      F.

You are in denial right now, we all have been there. If you are interested in TDB´s I would recommend a very good book by our own Tim Curly (et al.): "BULL´s EYE".

                        Regards,

                        Daniel
