        Hi Mike

Absolutely Fé"'(§g Amazing . What the hell is that

I already could make some comments but like Don I first would like to see better obverse and reverse pics. If possible also a close-up of the mm. Did you buy it?

        This should be fun

No Philippe it is not mine unfortunately...has the same characteristics as another rarity we have talked about...(the hybrid hollow/semi-hollow variety)...i should be able to get a head on shot loaded by tonight....this badge was purchased in the early 80's from Manions, no other history prior to that is known....the badge is not currently in my possesion so i have to send emails to get pictures.

Fascinating badge, Mike. Until you get more pictures I've enlarged it here.
Looks like shear marks, Zimmerman-style hinge and catch with what appears to be a good Zimmermann mark in relief!!

Looks good from here, but looking forward to other opinions.

                Hi Guys,

Lets already try with what we can learn from the pics Mike posted

                1. For sure not the SC Zimmermann design, but yet another "Wernstein look" design. This shouldn't be a problem since we never had proof that the SC Zimmermann was in fact made by Zimmermann. The habit of design sharing however seems consistant with Zimmermann's policy (cfr. their IAB's)

                2. Very convincing maker mark

                3. Correct hardware and based upon the big gide lines this would already have been a later badge since the guide lines were clearly designed to accommodate the earlier bigger hinges

                4. Very believable aging. Finish is almost completely gone but still present on the higher quality solder, hinge and pin.

                5. Whitout a doubt extremly rare but why? Zimmermann was a mass producer. The answer could be hidden in that semi hollow design. IMO there may have been problems with this production technique. This would also explain why there don't seem to be many semi hollw AS PAB's arround.

                6. Why did Zimmermann make the effort to mark this strange badge that probaly was produced only in very low quantities but never again marked another PAB. Or did they simply stop producing PAB's.

                7. Compared to the Semi hollow AS this looks like a massive little bugger and I wouldn't be surprised at all to find out that it's quite heavy. Not really consistant with trying to save material by switching to a semi-hollow production technique.

Just some initial thoughts on this extra ordinary PAB. Can't wait untill you find out more Mike. Maybe you also could ask your contact some weight and measurment info.

Can't imagin that anybody has seen this before. We must have discussed SC Zimmermann PAB's in dozens of threads and nobody ever stepped forward to tell us that he saw or owned a mm Zimmermann that looked completely different.

Somehow I have the feeling that this badge will leave us with more questions than answers.

It would be nice to have dead on scanns from front and back.

                  Cheers.

Gee, I wish there was stuff like that on Manion's today!

Very convincing appearance. The way the finish is partially absorbed on the front looks very much like zinc silver daisies I have owned. Not that I'm making any connection between this badge and the maker of the semi-hollow daisies, just that the finish looks similar.

Anyone else ever see one of these before? I have not. Great find, Mike!

                    Regards,
                    Greg

Some daisies with finish like this.

The eagle's head is surely unique, and one I would need a strong argument on to convince me that it is authentic. One recurring quality that all these "Zimmerman" badges display in their respective lineage of design and hinge/catch evolution is an identical eagle head.
