    Gents,
    This looks to be a nice unmarked Souval to me, but someone asked me about the lack of cutout by the gun as being a sure sign of a fake. As you know, the gun and wing usually touch (with some exceptions), but I have never heard that a lack of cutout here means it is fake. Has anyone else heard that? The rivet count is spot on, etc. The one area I am unsure of is the hinge and I would like to get better pictures, but the badge looks fine to me.

    Any thoughts?

      Yeah, I know. That is why I want to see the hinge from an angle. There should be an area to mount the hinge for an RS. But you are right - that is my one red flag. Still, doesn't condemn the badge at this point IMHO.

        Marc, I don't like this badge at all. As Don says, the hinge with such sharp corners is always a bad sign, but just look at how soft the reverse edges are compared to originals! Not just compared to Souvals, but all flaks in general.....its just very soft and indicative of a soft casting in my opinion.

        But specifically regarding the triangular cutout, I wouldn't discount a badge based solely on that aspect. It was such a small cutout, it most certainly was done by hand by most makers (and NOT part of the die trimmer). And because it was a manual process, I am sure there were cases were this extra trimming was dispensed with.

          And I am leary - hence the thread. But I want to see more photos of the badge before I condemn it. If it is a repro it is very well done and I would not then be surprised if it was a post-war Souval with some left over stock for the hardware. The details look spot-on regarding the die. Of course I don't have the dimensions...

            Just got these. Based on the hinge I have to say I think it is a good, post-war Souval. Thoughts?

                    Hi Marc,

                    Thanks for the new pics. I tend to agree with your assessment that its a post-war fake most likely made by souval. However, I have seen a definate souval fake and it actually had better detail and cutouts than this example! So I tend to think that if Souval made it, they did much later than some of their other fakes on the market. The reverse cutout is just really sloppy compared to their wartime originals and their earlier postwar fakes IMO.
