Difference between Wartime & 1957 S&L badges

Hi Tom, I believe this extra discussion and photos have really helping the understanding of this thread. I also agree with you re: those very narrow hinges present on the 57 pieces. I cannot recall ever seeing them on a badge that I personally believed was wartime constructed. A person who reads this thread in the future should now have a better understanding at what you were trying to get at, and won't have the misconception like I did that you were referring to unmarked badges with scratches on the pins as postwar production. It now makes much more sense to me and in conjunction with finishes and the other important things we use to determine originality will be a helpful tool.

Hi Tom, one more thing re: the hinges. On the 57 pieces with the very narrow hinges there does not seem to be the extra wide ridge at the base of the hinge that is present on what I think are the wartime hinges.

Regarding the hinge, you are correct that the 1957 hinges do NOT have the wide flange at the base like the wartime hinge do. But rather the 1957 hinges are more like tall block hinges, like the ones used by FLL on their CCCs and GWL on the LW badges. However, I would content that the wartime hinges by these makers are longer and their edges sharper in comparison to the 1957 hinges.

Great work!!It gives us a great bit of information to increase our arsenal of knowledge to filter out post war produced badges.Did the different manufacture buy their pins/needle from a subcontracor, or did they make them them self ?

That mark looks like neither. It certainly isn't S&L's "wartime dimple" toolmark. It loosely resembles the "1957 scrape", but still not a good match at all. The hinge also doesn't look like an S&L hinge to me, so I doubt we are looking at something that S&L produced (either wartime or postwar). What type of badge is it?
