    Silver Tank Destruction Badge

Here's another one for the jury. I've read many of the postings, but have some that swear they have non-magnetic tanks on original pieces of cut uniforms, etc.

    Details on this one:
Non-Magnetic, 30mm Tall x 88mm Wide, Verdigris present (meaning Copper/Bronze present, not steel), black band weave going upper-left to lower right, Nothing on front or back glows under blacklight but glue inside has a strange yellowish green look...

Anyone venture a guess on when and where this was done?

    Thank you, Rich

I have one I got from a veteran in the early 70s. He had a few mint ones (and lots of other great stuff!) he took from a quartermaster detail. Mine is magnetic. The glue holding on the background material is now crystalized and is amber in color, if that helps. I'd post some pictures but don't know how.

          Dear Rich,

Besides your tank being non-magnetic, also the direction of the lines in the black stripes speaks for a post 1945 item. It is \\\\\\ instead of ///////.
          Cheers, Frank

I have seen undoubtedly original TDBs that are not magnetic. Too much emphasis is placed on this point. Some fakes are magnetic, and some originals are not. It's the quality that counts. To say all should be magnetic is like saying that all black wound badges should be magnetic. These things were made over a three year period, so it is extremely likely that different manufacturers were involved.

                    Robin,
I can certainly understand that, and have a friend with a Non-Magnetic that all that have seen it feel is very real. But, how do you feel about the one I listed at the top?

                    Thanks, Rich

                      Rich

I have one like yours and it has been discussed twice since 2001. I still do not know 100% if it is good or not. The two sticking points have been the size of the tank and the weave of the black strip. In the previous thread I felt that I had produced photographic evidence that there were tanks that were larger. However, I have not been able to find anthing on the weave of the black stripe. Anyway, I have attached a link to the other thread and hope more information might come to light this time.

                        Rich.

From the photos, yours looks OK to me, although I'm pretty sure the green backing cloth has been glued on as a replacement at some point.

And the back. The backing cloth is long gone.

                              Robin,

Do you have any history on your badge? The reason I ask is that I have it's twin and because of the size of the tank and the weave of the black stripe is different from the exmaples in "Tank Killers" by Mr. Thomas Breyette it has always been labled as a questionable piece. Any insight you might provide would be appreciated.
