      Hi,

A definite opinion on a GB 25/50 numbered assault badge???

Seriously, imo these are one of the hardest numbered assault badges to authenticate - too many very good repros.

For what it's worth, I actually like the construction of this one. The only thing that gives me some pause is the finish - not the absence of finish itself, that's not unusual on zinc badges. I'm referring to those light "scratch" marks which are apparent on the reverse of the wreath, in the region between the reverse left hand rivet and the GB mark - I've seen that type of light "scratching" on too many repros. That's certainly not enough to call the badge a repro of course.

I don't want to start another 'Dachau' thread here, but has anyone wondered how numbered Panzer & General Assault Badges were hardly ever seen until the 1980s, and now there are lots of them about? I know they were made and issued towards the end of the war, are shown in photos pre-45, etc. etc. but I just think it's another of those curious facts. Personally, I prefer the hollow Brehmer versions like this one, rather than the solid 'JFS' and 'RK' ones. Just my opinion, based on observations over the years.

Yes, same thing goes for example on those anti-partisan badges, today everyone has one.

                Interesting thought

There are superb reproductions of the GB PAB's (numbered). However, there are some specific points that the repros fail on and if you know where/what to look at, you'll do OK. As a general rule of thumb, some dealers will not carry them at all!
Regarding the JFS Numbered PAB's, again, some superb repros and much, much harder to distinguish, unless the badges are in your hands, IMO.

                    RE: Sifting through

The best advice I can give with these badges is to study, study, study... not just the images logged in this forum of both bad, and good badges, but to get out to collectors & shows and handle the real ones. Once you start handling the real badges, it gets (IMO) much easier to spot the bad ones. I believe for me, it's the actual handling that helps most. With few collectors around and crappy shows, I end up buying lots of badges on-line, just to be able to handle them!
