GAB - Frank & Reif - Some Opinions Needed

Here is a really nice Frank & Reif massive (Heukemes GAB 1.5.4) that is very attractive. Nice details and very smooth, finished reverse.

However, I have a question on the hinge, pin, and catch. How do they look to you. The example in the Heukemes book has a "C" shaped catch like this one but it's on a plate. This one doesn't.

At first, when you look at it, there appears to be discoloration around the hinge assembly and catch -- but on closer inspection, does not seem to be evidence of a re-attachment or replacement as those are so frequently badly and crudely done -- but maybe this is just a good job of it. I like this badge -- my favorite of a bunch that came in lately.

But I want to be sure of the details here and perhaps it's a variation not shown in the book.

It would be good to hear from you guys. Several photos coming up.

    Mike

          Hi Mike

I dont have a good feeling at all about this GAB. There is not a nice crispness to the maker mark and one of the close ups shows what appears to be pitting in and around the maker mark.

For me the set up is also not right and probably tampered/replaced.

Maybe others will also chime in.

          regards
          Graeme

I do not like the details in the wreath of that badge. In particular the pebling in the top portion of the wreath appears strange. Fake in my opinion.

              I agree. I don´t like it either.

In addition to the points mentioned before, the pebbling inbetween the eagle´s wings and the swas is also absent on this badge. Should be there on an original F&R.

              IMO a cast fake.

I have a zinc and semi-hollow version of this badge. Both have plated catches. Here is a picture of the areas above the eagle's head and around the swaz. Note the distinctive cratering and pebbling. Can you provide a larger and clearer picture of these areas on your badge so we can do a comparison?

                  ....

Thanks, everyone for your responses -- though a bit delayed, I am happy to have them. I have a batch of GABs I wanted to offer on e-stand and this was one I wanted to have authenticated beforehand. I will provide more photos.

This really is a beautiful badge in hand -- but "if in doubt, chicken out" is what my mother always said.

                  More later,

                  Mike

                    ..............

Mike, I saw a past thread of an authentic one and the owner said his weighed
30.8 grams. Is there a way you can weigh it? Just trying to help out.

                        Hmmmmmmmm.....

Boy, I'm definately not an expert but if this is a fake, this has to be one of the
best. Would like to hear what people say about the weight.

Believe me, my photos are really not good and don't capture the look and feel of this one. I am not one to disagree with the experts here, as this is an area new to me, but as you said, Snoopy, this one is pretty nice.

                          Best,

Here's one I used to own - your badge is OK IMO but maybe it has been cleaned with a kitchen scourer or something similar!

In looking in the Heukemes book, the thing I was most concerned about was the catch. Yours has the plate.
