New IAB this weekend - what do we call it ?

    Hi all
Picked this one up last weekend.
I have seen this uncommon variant a few times in old posts.

And there is another thread in which I think Thomas Durant has one ?

    Hi Rich,

This is an original, unmarked SchuCo design in my opinion. The reverse hardware setup is not common, but is known on a few of these. I don't have this particular one in my collection, but I may have posted one in the past in discussions. When I get home tonight I will take a look in my files and post some more, but yours looks fine from what I can see.

If it doesn't have a hinge and catch, I'm not interested......well, maybe a little

I agree with Tom...This is an attributed ShuCo Design hollow zinc with the so-called Wiedmann or Lily Pad hardware set up.

        Yours is very nice...congrats

        Here is mine to compare...

        Best Regards, fischer

Nice to see I have a good one.
              One thing I have noticed while researching this one is the following;

This type of Weidmann hinge plate when seen on a 'marked' Weidmann piece invariably has a rounded or bevelled edge to the flat plate.
On this badge and the other examples, including other IAB's and PAB's where this type of hinge appears on NON weidmann designs, have in contrast. a sharp edge.
However when looking at my hinge under an eyepiece, the rounded/bevelled edge is present but on the underside of the plate, as though the hinge plate blank were put in upside down in the press machine ?
              Anyone else notice this ?

                Hi Rich......

......Nice IAB. I rather like the following name for this set-up from Fischer:
                Lily Pad hardware set up
Easy to remember. This description fits quite well.

One thing that it reaffirms is the belief that some manufacturers were not strictly limited to just one type of pin/hinge combo.
                Supply/demand/availability.

                  Hi Richard,

Not sure I follow you, you may want to post some pics of what you are talking about so we can compare.

I see what Richard means. I looks like a lily pad Wiedmann hinge only upside down type thing. E.g bevelled edge to the solder, rough edge upwards. Good point Rich. I don't have one to examine. Stewy

I have knocked up this comparison image showing the standard lilypad hinge on marked weidmann pieces on the bottom of the image (all the examples I have found have a brass type material). The variant type hinge found on differing maker badges shown on the top of the image, material coloured accoding to the badge. I hope you can see in the side on photo the rounding of the hinge plate on the underside of the badge in question.
The variant hinge seems to be Weidmann in appearance but made upside-down and in a different material! (if you know what I mean?).
Hope its OK to use some details of other members badges.

                        Hi Rich

Great array of hinges. I am glad you mentioned the hinge types, because I have always felt the "non weidmann" hinges looked slightly bigger and tinny, and was never convinced that they matched the hinges seen on marked weidmann badges.

Your observation of the rounded side underneath the hinges is very interesting.

Nice badges posted by the way, I have one but a different finish...or maybe no finish at all.
                        regards
                        Graeme

                          Hi Rich,

Indeed, a very nice collage and I see exactly what you are talking about now. The hinges are not only NOT rounded, but they seem to be a good bit larger than normal Weidmann-marked badges. Good observation and likely points to a different maker of the hardware at least.

                            Very good possibility Tom
