Look at the Close Combat Clasp. Is that a cloth version of it ?

I think it is just a badly retouched photograph, look at the bogus shape IAB, EK1 and collar tabs.

I'm surprised....

... we've never had a thread on this. You see it as much, if not more, in Imperial. Original period photographs with awards from post-pix touched in. I've seen this with EK1s, PLMs, etc. And it seems like the were touched in as part of the picture, as opposed to drawn on an existing. Never understood why they didn't just take another photo!

This was often (but not always) done to get 'quick' propaganda pictures out to the press. If a man at the front was awarded the oakleaves to the RK, for example, there was usually a few weeks between the award being approved/announced, and it actually being presented. Rather than wait weeks to publicise the award in the papers, the press would drag out his RK portrait photo from their files, have the oakleaves drawn on, and then print the story. This was a quick way around the time delay. The same applied to senior promotions, which is why we often see 'altered' rank badges.

I´d just like to take the opportunity to welcome you personally to the site and thank you for writing one of the first books that I ever owned about fake 3rd Reich badges. Back in the days when I started collecting you really broke new ground.
