IAB vs GAB Award criteria for Recon units

Which assault badge would an SS reconnaisance soldat have been awarded? (IAB vs GAB)

Would an armored unit be awarded a different badge from a foot unit?
Was there an unmechanized recon unit in a division?

Hello Mike

Members from Reconnaissance unit (whatever their branch of service - WSS or WH) would have received :
- either the GAB if he was a member of a Aufklarung Abteilungen (Reconnaissance Unit, typically in an Infanterie Division)
- or the PAB in Bronze if he was member of a Panzer Aufklarung Unit (Armored Reconnaissance Unit, typically in a Panzer Division or in some Panzer Grenadier Division).

In the last years of the war (1944-45), Division-Fusilier Abteilugen were created among Divisions. These units were usually created from Aufklarung Abt. which were turned into mere infantry units. As such, members of Div. Fus. Abt. were awarded the IAB in Silver.
